To Dread, or Not to Dread...That is the Question

Alright.  Since I've decided to spill my guts in a public forum, I will ask your opinion about the most daunting decision in my life right now.  (Don't laugh at me - this is serious.)  For many years, I have admired people with dreadlocks.  I love them.  I think they are beautiful and fascinating, and I want them.  However, I work with someone who says I can't have them because they're "not my culture."  This comment, as rude and ugly as it was, peaked my interest, and I decided to Google "white people with dreadlocks" just to see what came up.  I learned about the history of dreadlocks on Wikipedia, saw some pictures of dreadlocks gone wrong, and encountered many forums in which this topic was furiously debated.  Perhaps the most ignorant and hurtful opinion was expressed here.  Thankfully, I found a rebuttal to this letter and learned that most people do not share that ignorant, hurtful opinion.

While I want to be able to express myself and display the confidence I have gained over the past few years by making this dramatic change to my appearance, I still need some external validation.  In other words, I want to know what you think.  Here are a couple more links just in case you need more information before expressing your opinion.

  1. First of all, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks you should do with your own hair. Second, for a person to make a comment like that goes to show how ignorant they are. I would tell you to try to educate this person but, it would most likely fall on deaf ears.
